Created in the Alla Prima style this lively oil painting depicts the intensity and care put into each barbequed Huli-Huli Chicken. In the Hawaiian language “Huli-Huli” means to “Turn-Turn”.
Watching the Hawaiian creators of this delicious Saturday tradition is a delight to those lucky enough to spot their outdoor kitchen when it is located across from the Kameole Three Beach in Kehei, Maui.
(Please note: don’t expect to see them there if the Super Bowl is on!)
The South Kona winds were quiet as I started my plein air oil painting. In the distance are Molokini and Kahoolawe Islands. I painted quickly as I glanced toward an approaching squall over the ocean. An hour later as I finished my painting the winds reached the beach lifting bits of sand into the air. Quickly, closing the lid to protect my work, I smiled realizing I was coming away with a few precious bits of this famous beach’s sand to enhance this Alla Prima scene.
Aloha from Maui!
